Abraxas and His Generals
A small thought Experiment:
The Digital World functions very similarly to our own in many ways, especially when something spontaneous is produced within it. Take for example viruses, these dangerous programs can range from small insects that amount to little more than pests, to literal forces of nature that can wipe out whole sections of a network. Viruses are incredibly diverse, and a reason for that is because viruses not only come in all shapes and sizes, but like in real life, mutations and adaptations occur with frightening regularity.
Imagine how often people need to update security software and permission information, this is all because of the rapid changes that viral code can undergo. Even during the 21st century, when Viruses relied on man to become more powerful and evasive, there was a constant arms race between anti-virus programs and the viruses that they combated. Now imagine that arms race continuing into the world of the 24th century, where technology has evolved far beyond what was possible in the early days of computing. Now add in the fact that viruses in the real world mutate and adapt on their own, sometimes spontaneously, what if the viruses of the digital world were capable of the same thing? At a pace far faster than even the most virulent strains on earth could even hope to accomplish?
What if this were combined with a virus that had somehow managed to stand the test of time, surviving for centuries on the digital world? Mutating and adapting to the ever changing landscape, all the while becoming more intelligent and powerful as it devoured other viruses to survive. With the rapid mutations of a virus, and the power granted to it by the centuries of evolution and feeding that it had partaken in, what would happen if this virus were to become sentient, capable of independent thought and desires that were above the basic survival instincts of most viruses?
Ladies and Gentleman, meet Abraxas, and his desire is to consume the entire digital world...
