Personality: Sylux is a self styled "Rogue with a heart of Gold" type, he balks at rules and regulations, at least those written down on paper, but doesn't engage in brutality or harming the innocent. This trait makes him a bit of a grey area for most law enforcement, on one hand, he is a vigilante using stolen MILITARY programs, ones he uses to steal from "legitimate" companies and to blackmail criminal groups that have too much power in the real world to be touched. This makes him a criminal in the eyes of the law, but his actions have also saved lives, having helped the NPD in locating and rescuing Huntress, as well as providing some support in gathering information as well as actually fighting during the virus wars.
Despite Sylux's tendency to live his life in shades of grey legally speaking, his morals cannot be questioned. If someone uses their greater power to bully, degrade, harm or enslave others, they are fair game by any means that Sylux can muster. He will not extend his attacks to the person's family (unless they are also involved directly with their relatives shady dealings, then they're free game.) and he never, ever targets children, reasoning that given time and some guidance, they could be swayed to do the right thing. The only time he would even consider harming a young being is if they were consciously and KNOWINGLY doing harm to a person, and even then, he wouldn't take his usual amount of enjoyment from the act.
One would be hard pressed to see this strong moral conviction however, as Sylux has done his best to mask it behind a wall of smarm and insufferable snarkiness. He never appears to take a situation seriously, always mocking his opponent/victim and acting dismissive of almost everything around him. This behavior is twofold, for one thing, Sylux has become rather jaded, living among the worst of the worst for most of his life has knocked any kind of true optimism from his mindset, leaving only a somewhat bitter, if well intentioned man who uses his morals as an excuse to try and banish his own personal demons.
The second reason is simple, an enraged opponent underestimates him, and makes mistakes, revealing another key part of Sylux's good but not nice personality. He is underhanded and sly, and will do anything to gain an edge on someone if it can benefit him. Whether it's gambling or fighting, Sylux always has an angle, and shows a surprising amount of cleverness in how he analyzes his opponents by making them more and more enraged, opening them up to be read like a child's storybook.
Despite all of this, Sylux does have a less abrasive side to him when he's among people he trusts or those who need help. His snark and cynicism dies and is replaced by a friendly, if somewhat puckish man who uses his skills at reading people to be kind, instead of manipulative. Proof that, deep DEEP down, the man who was beaten into the dirt for trying to be a heroic rogue out of some pulp story is still there, he's just a bit more wise, and a lot more cunning than before.
History: Sylux's life is rather well hidden, with only snippets known before his part in the Rescue of Huntress brought him into the NPD's sights, and even then, it's incredibly spread out. Compounding matters is Sylux's silence, with only the barest minimum having been revealed to Huntress during her captivity, during which Sylux would take his "Personal shift" with her to prevent a more violent and cruel pirate from forcing himself onto her, but only used the time to talk and tend to her injuries, which was the only thing that saved him from being summarily deleted or incarcerated when the NPD rescued her.
What is known is that Sylux was born in the antarctic network, another nobody avatar spawned in the biggest shit-hole town at the bottom of the digital world. His early life is shrouded, but what can be pieced together reveals that Sylux wasn't always a criminal, but a wannabe "Heroic Outlaw", a man who bucked the rules but battled the wicked, swearing by his own creed and not letting any one's own morals and laws dictate his desires.
The result was expected, even back then, with Noxus' men providing a sort of counterweight to the brutality, crime was rampant, and a young, wet behind the ears good guy? Well, needless to say, Sylux was on the receiving end of many brutal beatings and injuries, once even being brutalized to the point of near death, until a newly arrived merchant (Masamune, who later became Justicar's unofficial "mentor" coincidentally.) patched him up and told him the hard truth. "In this place, the good must hide behind masks, or do nothing until others are willing to stand beside them."
A message promoting subtlety, but to the young Sylux, it was seen as a crushing condemnation from the very man who'd saved him out of the goodness of his heart. It was a hypocrisy, "Do good but not when people could hurt you". What sense did that make!? This, along with other, unrevealed hardships (Sylux simply said that "Life threw me a few more curve-balls after that...most of 'em aimed right at my damn face.") slowly eroded Sylux's sense that good deeds were worth anything, and eventually, he gave up, joining a band of thieves who made their living stealing credit card information or banking data, a choice made specifically because, in Sylux's mind, nobody got hurt, just their pocket books.
After several years of this, Sylux was approached by a member of a pirate band headed by the newly infamous Brigadier, who wanted "fresh meat" for his crew after the stunning success of his military heist. The now thoroughly jaded and bitter Sylux agreed, only on the condition that he focus on white collar crimes, an condition that was accepted...for the moment.
After this, things become nebulous again, Sylux put plenty of time into the firing range, becoming quite good in fact with arm mounted weapons and blades, which were seen as exotic and unique. But he never used that skill, at least, not until Huntress was captured, forcibly modified, and used as a..."traveling companion" by the pirates, which soon became physical and mental abuse. Something that disgusted and even enraged Sylux, his old morality sparking once more after years of jaded apathy had seemingly snuffed it out.
At first, he simply spoke up...and got beatings from his "crew mates" for the trouble. This escalated more and more, until finally, on one occasion, Sylux caught a crew member choking Huntress to near death...and blew his brains out. This act is what cemented Huntress' trust in Sylux, as well as his willingness to DIRECTLY confront Brigadier, which only got him brutalized many, many times. As for why Brigadier never killed him, Sylux could only guess, but he put his money on the fact that the arrogant pirate captain thought he could "break" Sylux by making him realize that it was hopeless to oppose the status quo of the ship...pity for the pirate captain that Sylux no longer cared if he lived or not, he wasn't going to let some asshole tell him that his way of living was the wrong way any more.
After 5 years of waiting, Sylux finally got his chance to escape, joining the NPD officers Shepard and Noxus in breaking Huntress free, as well as stealing highly experimental blueprints from the now deceased Pirate before his ship was destroyed, giving most of them to the NPD...but the few he kept, he used to forge a new identity, and with this new technology, Sylux struck out on his own, saving many during the war using underworld contacts that he forged, as well as his weapons and ship, the Rand to fight against Abraxas' forces with the NPD and even a few warbands by himself.
Now, he works in the Antarctic network, keeping tabs on Halberd and his little plans for world domination, waiting for a chance to take out one more megalomaniac and do some good in the world.
Add-Ons: Combat - Battle Armor: This armor suit is a modified design taken from Brigadier's ship during the NPD's raid on the pirate vessel, and before that it was intended for use by the WNSC's commandos before the loss of it's data rendered that project scrapped. The armor is a combination "combat skin" and environmental suit, equally capable of protecting the wearer from enemy fire and shrapnel as well as protecting the wearer from suffocation, drowning or cold and heat ((To an extent, weapons grade thermal weapons can overcome this barrier system, it just makes the wearer resistant to cold and hot environs like polar or volcanic terrain)).
These systems are complimented by a built-in modular weapons system mounted on the users right arm, HUD displays that improve accuracy and a command visor module that allows the user to remotely control a Delano-Class gunship that is usually paired with the armor suit. ((See the DP's section for more on that last one)).
The armor's plating and protective under-weave layer reduce any damage taken by 20% without reducing the wearer's mobility, and it's high grip soles keeps it's owner upright and on firm footing no matter the terrain or weather conditions. Simply put, this armor, while not excelling in any one area, is a solid, reliable suit that can be modified for multiple mission profiles and stands tough against foes big and small.
Combat - Shock Coil: The main weapon system of Sylux's battle armor, the Modular Weapons Mount ((Hereby referred to by the Nickname given to it by Sylux, the Shock Coil)) is a prototype of most modern modular weapons, with a twist. Instead of requiring a stock or recoil compensation, the weapon is directly mounted onto the armor's right arm, drawing power from the suit itself, while also possessing an onboard power supply in the event that the armor becomes damaged to the point of being unusable.
This turns the user's body into the weapon's stock, distributing any recoil through the whole of the wielder's body and producing an extremely comfortable and stable weapon that is incredibly accurate despite being rather potent. The Shock Coil's trigger is located on a vertically mounted grip that automatically adjusts to comfortably fit any sized hand and arm, it does not impede elbow movement or wrist rotation either, instead clamping securely to the wearer's forearm.
The weapon itself appears unimpressive, simply a triangular metal protrusion bolted to the user's arm...that is until the weapon fires anyways. The Shock Coil's default firing mode requires no barrel, instead it focuses an extremely potent stream of energized code at the very tip of the weapon, firing it in a rapid 15 round burst of searing energy bolts that deal a moderate amount of damage per projectile and are extremely accurate and have a good range despite the weapon's small size. ((Approximately 100 yards.))
And for close Range engagements, the user can modify weapon into blade mode, this narrows the Shock Coil's casing to a razor thin, and razor sharp edge that deals deep wounds that cause a large amount of damage with every strike. However, the blade is too fragile to fire any kind of blast, leaving the user without any kind of ranged weaponry, be it DP or Add-On.
Combat - Sense Move: This Add-on is a quick evasion system built into the Armor's sensors. The Sense Move program is a series of powerful thrust vector jets built into the body and limbs of the suit. With a single thought, it can produce a powerful burst of thrust that propels the user a good 15 feet in any direction, even straight up. This is useful for traversing tough terrain as well as dodging dangerous attacks, but can only fire once every 2 posts.
Combat - Battle Sense: A sensor algorithm integrated into the Battle Armor's head's up Display, the Battle Sense Program sends out thousands of pulses a minute in a 360 degree radius, collecting gigabytes of data on things like air vibrations, temperature changes, and even seismic scans.
This data is processed by the Suit's onboard systems, allowing the user to detect opponents that are using Chameleon, Cloaking or Silencing programs that could conceal them from other, less sophisticated sensor equipment. However, the program has a drawback, it is incapable of detecting anything over 20 feet away, making the user vulnerable to ranged opponents if they become over reliant on it.
Connectivity - The Rand: The Rand is a Delano-7 Gunship that is specially designed to work alongside his pilfered armor suit. The craft is large for a ship of it's class, and as a result is somewhat slower than other, lighter models. This is offset by the ship's heavier armor plating and weapons, making it closer to a small dropship in terms of functionality.
The ship is controlled via an integrated Command Visor Download within the Suit, and at maximum thrust can reach a top connectivity boost of 700%, Approximately 500 MPH using real world measurements. ((For more information regarding the Delano-7 type gunship, read here: link))
Downloaded Programs: Combat - Gunship Airstrike: This program allows Sylux to direct The Rand in an airstrike without being behind the controls. This program is unfortunately a bit limited, relegated to putting in designated coordinates and ordering the ship to come in and blast that area to hell and back due to memory limitations. Despite this deficiency, this program allows Sylux to deliver an incredibly damaging barrage against enemies that would normally outclass him, making it invaluable in a pinch.
The airstrike is rather simple, the Rand dives toward the target at high speed and unloads it's entire payload of munitions, both rockets and rotary guns, into a circular target area of about 35 feet in diameter. This deals a devastating amount of damage to anything caught in this "splash zone", but renders the Rand useless in a fight for a period of 6 turns, as it requires time to re arm.
Combat - Shock Coil Mod: Autocannon: A modification for the Shock cannon's blaster systems, this program alters the shock cannon's projectiles and firing speed, sacrificing accuracy and improving firing rate by diverting power to the weapon's capacitors, improving the amount of energy it can hold and release per burst. This cuts the Shock coil's accuracy by 50%, but compensates by tripling it's firing rate, making it incredibly dangerous in confined environments or at close range. This mod does NOT alter the damage of the shock coil's bolts, just increases the amount fired in a single burst.
Combat - Photon Barrier: This is a simple one sided Barrier program, enemy attacks cannot breach it, but Sylux's blaster fire can, the emitter is fired from a concealed launcher on Sylux's left hand, burrowing into whatever surface it strikes before projecting a shield that covers an area of approximately 10 feet long by 10 feet high, this allows it to be used as a makeshift barricade when deployed in narrow corridors, allowing Sylux to give himself some breathing room to escape if a fight goes sour.
The shield is rather durable, able to endure a severe amount of damage before failing, and if an attack manages to breach the shield, it's intensity is lowered to whatever amount is left over after the shield is destroyed. Otherwise, the shield lasts about 4 turns, and requires a 5 turn cooldown after it fails before it can be deployed again.
Combat - Shock Coil Mod: Gungnir: Named for the mythical spear used by Odin, The Gungnir mod for the Shock Coil delivers a powerful blast with pinpoint accuracy, making it a potent sniping tool for when Sylux needs to keep his enemies at a distance.
The mod diverts a great amount of power to the targeting and stabilizing subroutines in the Shock coil, while also altering the discharge pattern of it's internal capacitors. This alteration turns the Shock coil into a designated sniping tool, instead of firing in a burst, the Shock Coil now has a charge function, gathering more and more energy before unleashing it in a single, potent burst of energy.
The charge time can be anywhere from one turn to five, and Sylux is not allowed to attack or shift weapon mods during this time, otherwise the charge is lost. (He can however move and use his movement abilities, meaning he's not completely helpless.)
The charge-to-damage scale is exponential, and after 5 turns, the bolt MUST be discharged, or there is the risk of a potentially fatal energy buildup that will result in an explosion. If the charge builds for the maximum amount of time, it also gains a side benefit...armor piercing capabilities. This makes the charging method a risk versus reward scenario, rendering Sylux essentially out of the fight in terms of offense for a long period...but the benefits make the risk something worthwhile when up against a powerful and heavily armored foe. Needless to say however, is that this program is incapable of being used at the same time as an armor piercing mod as a result.
Combat - Shock Coil Mod: Mjolnir: This mod is designed to augment the melee functionality of the Shock Coil's blade mode, adding an electrical current to the weapon that can short out barrier programs (such as energy shields or barriers, armor is not effected) as well as granting it the potential to overload an avatar's motor functions. This stuns them for one post and renders them immobile. This immobility also cancels out any charge that a program might have gathered, forcing it to restart when mobility is returned to the victim (This effect is determined by the target, not the user).
This mod only grants the shock benefits to the blade, and does not increase it's damage output.
Interface - Weakpoint Targeting: This mod allows Sylux to target weakpoints in an enemies armor, giving him the ability to strike that point and deal twice as much damage with a single attack, this mod draws a lot of energy to deliver such a quick, in depth scan, and requires 4 posts to recharge before it can be used again. (Note: when used with a burst fire mod, each bolt's damage is doubled as well. However, to get a full two times damage for the whole burst, all of the blasts must hit their mark.)
Interface - Aimbot: This program overclocks the targeting computer of Sylux's armor, giving him an unnerving boost of accuracy that makes it incredibly difficult to dodge, but not impossible. This buff lasts for only 2 posts, and requires a 6 post cooldown due to the potency of this program.
Repair - Patch Up: This Download is a targeted healing program, allowing Sylux to heal either himself or one other target to 75% of their maximum HP when damaged. This healing program, as powerful as it is, requires a 5 turn cooldown in between uses, due to power draw.
Repair - Code Flush: This program is similar to Patch Up, but instead of repairing Code Damage, this mod gives Sylux the ability to cure him or another single avatar of any and all hostile viral infections within their code. Virus based buffs are NOT effected however, so viral support characters are free to sling their programs around without fear.
This program is rather power intensive, and can only be used once every 5 posts.
