Despite what one would think, Viruses aren't the only beings in the digital world to use "viral code". Humans often use small amounts of it to create nasty "one shot" programs that can wreak havoc on a computer, while some avatars are capable of using small amounts to overload security systems with garbage data. These programs are computer programming spikes, or just "Comp. Spikes" among those who utilize them for good or ill intentions.
But these programs are just that, simple bits of code, arranged in a specific order to do ONE task, before they simply cease to function or are scrubbed from the victim's software. This is what a classic computer virus would be considered, but with the evolution of digital life, the programs known as "viruses" have evolved as well. Viral code as we know it now is far, FAR closer to it's organic counterpart, even becoming superior, especially compared to the self copying programs of the 20th and 21st century.
Viruses now possess code that almost defies logic, self replicating yes, but the mutations that naturally occur thanks to such rapid replication affect the whole being, instead of producing random tumors or horrifying deformities. (most of the time, a lot of viruses are still pretty bloody ugly, but the deformities aren't HINDERING them is the most important detail, just making sure they don't win any beauty contests.)
THIS is true viral code: Instead of cancer, it's like viruses can adapt and evolve hundreds of times in the span of their operational cycles...in short, the older the virus, or the more code they have within their bodies, (More code means more replications per cycle, meaning more mutations and better chances of beneficial evolution within the code of the virus) the more dangerous and adaptive they are.
However, while this is now doubt a great boon to Virus-kind, (and a right pain in the arse for us when a particularly stubborn example OF said kind rolls around with a chip on his shoulder) they aren't the only ones capable of benefiting from the highly mutable nature of viral code; normal avatars can bond with this true viral code...and if they're lucky (or specifically designed to interface with it and evolve), they can become so much more...
