Name: Jacob "Jake" Derrix
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Appearance: link
Avatar: Saber
Affiliation: Downtown NYNPD, Special Operations Division.
Personality: Normally a pretty quiet spoken person Jacob's personality can vary depending on how people interact with him. He can be kind, if people are polite to him, or he can be a complete A**HOLE when provoked. Despite this, he somehow always manages to retaliate without having to raise his voice too much unless he has to reach past a lot of background noise. Despite how he normally acts, his training and respect for authority never wavers, and he never talks back to a superior unless he questions their motives. While he can be rough around the edges when you first get to know him, if you manage to befriend him, he'll lay down his life, and his ammunition to protect his friends.
History: Jake was orphaned at a young age, admitted to an orphanage in Brooklyn, NY at the age of 5 after his parents were killed in a massive subway crash caused by a rogue avatar hijacking the controls. It wasn't until a year later that he was adopted by a couple looking to raise a child of their own, but unable to for reasons he didn't quite understand at the time. His adopted father was a man of the military, and had a strong value of respecting people who were in positions of power within society, but his status as a military veteran also earned him respect in return. After learning from his surrogate father why he was so respected, Jake asked to be taught how to be just like his new role model.
Jake was taught the values of how to be an effective enforcer at a young age from his new father, and how to understand compassion and when to consider negotiation before violence. He excelled academically, and graduated at the top of his class to advance to the leading college in NYC. Taking a law enforcement major, minoring in Computer Science, He graduated with Honors and his credentials (as well as a good word from his old man), got him into the New York Net Police Department (NYNPD). Jacob originally had a standard issued avatar as his net partner while growing up, with a hand-me-down V3 Terminal, and he was originally working under the command of Lieutenant Kathryn Bale as a virus buster. That is, of course, until one mission resulted in him losing everything in the blink of an eye. During one mission cleaning out the gun shop inside of the town mall, Jake's avatar was deleted by a powerful underground net avatar, and all of his data was lost due to the lack of a failsafe in his V3 terminal. Unable to access the network with assistance, he underwent vigorous hands-on computer training and taking additional communications classes to assist in maintaining the peace in the real world in the NYNPD's computer maintenance division and as a negotiator for life and death situations.
When he discovered that the Research and Development division was working on some prototype combat avatars, Jake immediately participated in observing their development, codenamed the Cyberblade project. The end results of the project were three avatars, each specializing in different styles of combat: Saber; a balanced out combat avatar skilled with a Data Blade and De-Rez pistol (short for de-resolution), Dagger; a speed and stealth based avatar specializing in stealth kills with his short sword and shuriken, and Halberd; a power based avatar utilizing brute force and durability to fight tougher, harder to defeat opponents, all while wielding a massive Datablade Broadsword.
Everything was going fine until a heavy thunderstorm blew in before the final development, shorting out the power and causing some bugs in the avatar's programming. Dagger and Halberd, the two less developed avatars went rogue, forcing themselves out of the Police network and into the datascape, leaving only the nearly complete prototype, Saber, who was struggling in his containment field to be finished. Given Jake's hands on experience maintaining data manually, he assisted in completing Saber's programming, and offered to help with recovering the other two avatars, in exchange for having Saber as his new avatar. Because of Saber's lack of recognition in the public eye as a member of the police department, Jake and Saber were reassigned to the Special Operations division of the NPD, dealing with undercover jobs, in addition to acting as "civilian" assistance when the police need someone extra on hand to turn the tide in their favor.
Jake and Saber quickly became close friends, given the bond that they shared while Jake was fixing the damage to Saber's code. With the official go ahead from Lieutenant Bale, they have now been tasked with participating in any incidents, criminal or otherwise, that may lead them to the two missing avatars. During the down-time when the rogue avatars are off the radar, the duo go about living a normal life, gaining more combat experience through friendly exhibition matches in arcades and participating in the annual tournaments held across the globe. The only exception to their 'normal' life being when they are needed for official Net Ops business.
During their time in net ops, Jake has developed close friendships among his peers, as well as the friends and family of those peers he befriended. But drama struck when one of his oldest and closest friends was killed, and things only got more out of control when some of Saber's friends were abducted, by what was later found to be the same group that had placed a target on him and his friends. He and Saber banded together with everyone who had been victimized by the group responsible, and freed their avatar friends. But in doing so, have they unearthed something far deeper than a forced reclamation of property?
Special Equipment: A refurbished Desert Eagle .44 Magnum with an 9 round clip, that fires just as cleanly as when they were first made. Not exactly standard issue for Net Police, but it helps when the situation calls for a little extra "force" when assisting law enforcement.
-A 9mm Police-issued handgun with standard issue rounds and a couple clips of EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) rounds for dealing with faulty or hijacked machinery. The EMP rounds have to connect with circuitry or any metal connected to the circuitry to force a device to shut down. Each Magazine holds 18+1 rounds (+1 is in the chamber).
-A red, black, and white spider bike, with an electric engine with a strong enough charge to run for half a week without needing a recharge, so long as the machine is shut off while not in use. A digital interface is installed in the bike to allow for remote control by Saber, if Jake needs to have a quick means of transportation. The bike also was fitted with two hidden storage compartments for Jake's guns and spare ammunition, as well as a security system linked to Jake's terminal, to notify him if someone is attempting to hijack his ride.
-V5 wrist terminal (MK2): A prototype terminal developed by NPD to accommodate Saber's new Limit Breaker feature. It sports one exobyte of holographic storage on a round silicon crystal barely larger than a quarter in diameter, with 5 terabytes of RAM. His model is made of a black, heavy duty plastic molded around a reinforced, titanium wire frame, allowing for shock, impact and heat resistance. It also has buttons on the frame itself for locking and unlocking the buttons for its primary functions: 3D projection, audio, wireless broadcasting (for tracking prevention), and a high powered flashlight.
The prongs on the frame of the terminal work as exit chutes for another feature for the new terminal; 3D projection technology. This allows for 3D menu interaction and communication with the use of high definition nanotechnology. The projection is intuitive, and adjusts itself so the front of the projection is always facing Jake, unless he manually moves the image himself.
The one drawback to this more intricate design is the fact that Jake can only access the data stored on the terminal through the 3D menu interface, which makes its effectiveness in combat greatly diminished. The counter of this flaw is that Saber's code has been adjusted so he can actively access his downloaded programs without manual assistance from Jake, allowing for more effective combat adaptation on his own. Despite this, Jake is still able to intervene in combat, if he finds a better option to turn the tide and win a fight.
