Sprites
A group almost unknown to the common populace of both the physical world and the Network, sprites could best be described as the ‘natural’ inhabitants of the Net. Born from Resonance, these beings possess a different data structure from avatars, and this allows them to think and act in ways most avatars would consider impossible. A secretive group, sprites prefer to keep their true nature hidden behind appearances similar to the viruses and avatars that inhabit what they see as the ‘top layer’ of the Net. These beings typically range in intelligence from animal-level to human, and their form often reflects their intellect.
All sprites possess the following traits:
Braided Data Structure: As opposed to the parallel lines that make up avatars and viruses, the data of sprites possesses a braided structure if observed directly. This makes it extremely difficult for avatars and viruses to analyze, as their programs aren’t designed to handle data structures other than parallel lines.
Program Incompatibility: The structure of a sprite’s data renders them unable to incorporate programs or add-ons into their data. While a sprite is capable of using a program or add-on, such as borrowing an avatar’s weapon or hitching a ride on one’s vehicle, they cannot keep such programs as part of their arsenal.
No Core Programming: Sprites don’t possess core programming like avatars do, meaning that if they die, that’s it. They’re gone. It also means that traditional healing programs don’t work on them, as such programs rely on copying the core data of an avatar to patch its damage.
Beings Of Resonance: Sprites utilize Forms, identically to technomancers. While the exact appearance of a Form may fluctuate from sprite to sprite, and even from use to use, they still fall into the same general ‘categories’ as technomancers’ forms. They are also capable of threading, and often use this ability to practice and learn new Forms. There are no reports of sprites possessing echoes, but the depths of the Resonance are still largely unknown, so who knows for sure?
