Rebirth (Saber)

[Mani4c]

The inside of the Brooklyn NPD precinct's server was in chaos, fully armed and armored SWAT avatars were directing what was essentially a mass exodus from the server to the Durendal, which had become a mobile backup in the event of another attack. Shepard was onboard the vessel, sending orders and making sure that every avatar had their own quarters as a backup storage space in the event of their terminals being compromised, or if the precinct fell.

Throughout the Chaos, a lone avatar, wearing a brown slacks, a pressed white shirt, suspenders and a long brown trench-coat was sprinting through the server, heading towards Baretta's office and clutching a datafile like it's loss would kill him.

When he reached Baretta's office, he began to pound on the door. "Ma'am! I need to talk to you, I'm from the Vice unit, and it's of VITAL importance!"

Inside of Baretta's office, Mani4c stood guard and listened as Shepard discussed crew accommodations on board the Durendal, specifically her and Mani4c's. "Listen Baretta, A few of these cabins can hold more than one avatar, if you want to double up with Mani4c, tell me. It'll save me a single occupant cabin and I'm waiting on you, Saber and Viral before I'm finalizing anything." The Durendal had more than enough space, but Shepard was concerned that they might run out of room if they were joined by other crews, or if they took on civilians.

Mani4c looked up when the Vice officer began banging on the door. "Wasn't Vice ordered to watch out for any viral activity in the Red-Light?"

[Saber]

Baretta looked at Mani4c when the vice avatar started banging on the door, walking swiftly to the entrance "This doesn't sound good, the red light usually keep to themselves." Baretta opened the door and let the officer in "Alright, what have you got?"

[Mani4c]

The Vice officer ran in past Baretta and placed the datapad into a reader on Baretta's desk, activating a holographic projector that displayed a large amount of information regarding the illegal Mod trade in the Red-Light district.

"The Red-Light...formerly known as the deep web, this is where NPD vice had been stationed for the last year, at first it was standard stuff, unregistered prostitution, gun-running, mod smuggling and the like. but then Abraxas attacked, and we've become a front line recon post should he try to come in through the red light...but you know this already, I'm sure" Mani4c nodded, "Yeah, so...what's so important?"

The Officer reached into his coat and pulled out a vial, inside was a thick, glowing purple serum. "This...is the latest in illicit mods in the underground. They call it 'Evolve'. If someone uses this, they can alter their code in whatever way they please...sound familiar?" Mani4c's eyes widened. "Lilith..." The Officer nodded, "We've analyzed this sample, it's not just Lilith's code, apparently it's been mixed with a cocktail of viral programs that infect the users cognitive processors, eventually overwhelming them and turning the user into a viral berserker with all of Lilith's powers."

Mani4c sighed. "Damn it...this isn't good. If Viral finds out..." Before Mani4c could finish his sentence, There was a tremendous crash from outside the room, Mani4c whirled around and saw Viral, who looked like he had one foot in the grave due to his code degrading, with a surprised look on his face. "Viral..." Before anyone could stop him, Viral tore down the hall like a bat out of hell, knocking aside any officer who got in his way.

[Saber]

Baretta cursed under her breath when Viral overheard their info about the red light, knowing they needed to do something or he would be going on a solo suicide mission "Lock down the Durendal, nothing is to be given entry or exit permissions until Viral is contained." She opened a camm link to R&D, where Bit was working "Bit, I need you to-" <Activate the antivirus stasis field, I know. I saw him running like a madman, Captain. Even if he does escape the ship, he won't be going anywhere once he hits the sky." She then turned to Mani4c "Mani4c, I need you to stall him. IF he escapes the ship, and manages to break free of the stasis field, use the virus suppression bullets to reduce his strength and subdue him. He's going on a suicide mission, and we need to save him from himself."

[Mani4c]

Mani4c nodded and sprinted down the hallway after Viral, despite being terminally corrupted, Viral was still rather fast, shoving crewmen out of the way and heading towards the ships security center, the lockdown and anti-virus screen having been announced via the ship's intercom. Mani4c was fairly certain that Viral would be easy enough to talk down...then he heard gunshots, specifically shots coming from VIRAL'S pistols.

Mani4c's eyes widened and he burst into the room, only to be met by the butt of Viral's pistol smashing him in the nose, actually breaking it. Mani4c toppled to the floor, he looked up and saw Viral aiming one pistol at Bit's head, the other hanging at his side. Mani4c looked over and saw The Doctor nursing a sprained wrist, Viral having injured it by shooting the sonic screwdriver out of his hand. "I'm going to ask you only once Bit...lower the Anti-Virus screen, or I shoot you in the knees and do it myself." Viral looked over his shoulder and noticed several SWAT officers sprinting towards the room. He flicked his arm, which turned into a segmented chain with a three taloned claw on it, and grabbed the door, slamming it shut and locking the officers out before turning back to Bit.

[Saber]

<She doesn't have that authority anymore Viral. Only someone of Captain rank or higher has the permissions to approve the release of a lockdown.> Baretta's projection formed in the R&D room, a calm and sympathetic look on her face <Viral, I know what you're trying to do. But even as you are now, this is still a suicide mission you're trying to go on. Let us help you, we can go and confront her together, and keep the brunt of Abraxas' forces off of you while you confront Lilith yourself.> Her voice softened, almost pleading <Please Viral, all I ask is that we all get there as a group. Once we're there, I'll release the lockdown, and help you get a straight shot for whatever lies within the red light district."

[Mani4c]

Viral smiled when Baretta tried to talk him down, his expression calm and...friendly, Mani4c's eyes widened, Viral wasn't acting normal. Even this rash behavior was somewhat expected of him, but to react to being blocked from escaping with a smile? Something was wrong here. "Baretta...I've never had a chance to say this, but...you were always the best of the people here. You gave me a chance to try and be better, and I thank you for that."

Viral lowered his pistols and looked at his feet, seeming to give up. "But...there's something you don't understand. I don't intend to confront Lilith..." Viral looked back up, his face bearing a lopsided grin. "I'm intending to die." With that, Viral raised his pistols and opened fire on the console, destroying the video feed and disabling the ship's antivirus barriers. Mani4c sprung to his feet and tried to grab Viral, but the viral avatar simply sidestepped and clocked Mani4c in the back of the head with his magnum. "Sorry bro...but this isn't something I want you to see, take care of the others for me...and get Lilith back." Viral shot out the windows in the lab, leaping onto a maintenance catwalk and sprinting to a hatch that led to the ship's outer hull.

Viral threw open the hatch and clambered onto the outside of the ship, The winds tore at his cloak and threatened to blow him clear off of the Durendal. "I may be planning to meet my maker, but I'm not going to let Abraxas use Lilith's gifts to hurt others as long as this withered piece of shit body of mind can hold out..." Viral sprinted towards the edge of the ship, leaping off and straightening out so he shot towards the ground like a javelin. "Gonna need those chain whip things..." Viral's body switched to his "formal attire" sans the hat, as Viral continued his decent to the ground.

[Saber]

<Viral d-!> The video feed cut before Baretta could say anything more, and her influence in the locked down room was silenced. Bit watched as Viral leapt out of the ship, making his way toward the red light district with a sigh "...Doctor, please find Forge and let him know his skills are needed for framework repairs. I'll see about repairing the console so we can use the stasis field if necessary."

"Viral don't!...Dammit!" Baretta slammed her fist on the desk, angry at herself that she couldn't do more for her friend. But she knew that feeling sorry for herself, and feeling guilty wasn't going to fix anything, she was going to hold true to her promise "I am lifting the lockdown on the ship, get the durendal around! Follow Viral at all costs! We're backing him up in the red light district, whether he wants us to or not! And somebody get Saber on the line, We need an advance troop on site in case we can't make it there before Viral does!" She faced away from the desk, fists clenched tightly at her sides "...As of this moment...We are code orange..."

[Mani4c]

The Doctor nodded and began to contact Forge, telling him of the situation. "Damn it. Alright, I'll be there in 5 minutes tops." Mani4c clambered to his feet, rubbing the back of his head, "Son of a bitch!" Mani4c contacted Baretta, His expression one of irritation. "If that asshole wasn't terminal, I'd bust his head in...You want me to follow him?"

Viral waited until he was a few storied above the ground before flicking his wrist outwards, summoning a serpent-headed chain that shot out of his sleeve and sunk into the side of a skyscraper, securely anchoring itself to the building. Viral pulled forward, using his momentum to fly forward through the air before firing off another chain. Viral repeated this over and over, using the chains to swing through the air and reach the red light in under five minutes.

Viral dropped into a roll when he landed, dispersing his momentum without injuring himself. 'Like I NEED any more damage to this piece of shit framework of mine...' Viral began to walk through the Red-Light, taking in the sights...they weren't exactly pretty, Dingy streets that always seemed to be damp, cheap neon signs, and a crush of the desperate, the lewd, and the corrupt choking the sidewalks. 'Lovely...just fucking spectacular.'

Avatars, both female and male, loitered on the sides of the road, their revealing clothes and and the sensual glint in their eye making their profession well known. 'Even in the digital world, people are paying to get their rocks off.' Viral noticed that several of the women were shooting him flirtatious glances, either he was attractive to them...or, more likely, they could tell that he was lonely. Viral shot each and every one a near murderous glare, or at least the best he could manage given his weakened state.

Viral scanned the road, looking for a local bar or pub, he had learned from Justicar that the best places to gain info on local goings on was at the town watering hole. Unfortunately, Viral had know Idea where said watering hole would be, so he did the sensible thing, and asked the next person he saw. "Excuse me, I'm a bit of a Tourist, could you point me to the nearest bar?"

Said person was a young woman dressed in a short skirt, high-heels, a sleeveless top, had a decent amount of makeup on her face and a lecherous glint in her eye. Viral had just asked a hooker where the local bar was. 'A new low, even by my standards' The woman smirked, thinking that Viral was asking for her "company". "Well, There's the Stardust a few blocks down honey...they've got the best booze in town, anyone who's anyone will be there...are you a big shot honey?" The woman trailed her finger teasingly up Viral's arm, before noticing his distinct lack of interest.

"I'm just looking for information...thank you, oh, and here." Viral pulled out a credit chip and handed it to the woman before walking off. The woman looked at the chip and saw that it was worth 5000 credits, Viral had paid her a full night's work for about a minute and a half of conversation. "Heh, and they say Chivalry's dead."

[Saber]

Baretta answered Mani4c's call, and sighed, shaking her head in the video feed for Mani4c to see "Negative. We're too high up for you to materialize a speeder, and you don't have a flight program from what I've seen. And since your link to Viral has been broken, you don't have access to his abilities either. All we can do is wait in the Durendal, and hope that Saber will be enough to aid Viral until we get there."

A demonic looking avatar flew overhead, scanning the streets of the red light district. When he spotted someone that looked out of place, whom he reconized as Viral, he dove down and landed in front of the sentient virus. The avatar's demonic form flashed, before a red-armored avatar took his place "Pretty ballsy coming here on your own, in your condition...Even if it is a death wish." Before Viral could get hostile, Saber held up a hand in defense "Relax, I'm not here to stop you, the 'boss lady' sent me. Keep walking, I'll tag along and make sure you get to your final destination in one piece."

[Mani4c]

Viral looked at Saber, his expression one of annoyance. "Why do you idiots insist on tagging along, whether I finish this or not, I'm a dead man! I'm rotten to the core, and I don't mean like Gat or Abraxas." Viral pulled open his shirt, exposing a crisscrossing series of ragged depressions in his flesh, each one framed by bright green wire frames. "This, is what's happening to me...I'm not able to fight this fucking war anymore, but if I'm going down, I'm taking this Evolve shit with me! I will not let Lilith's code be used as a weapon..." Viral closed his shirt, his expression downcast, "I...I don't want you guys to see me like this, weak...vulnerable." Viral spat the last word as if it left a foul taste in his mouth.

Before Saber could respond, a quiet voice came from behind Viral. "Y-you want to get rid of that Evolve stuff too?" Viral whipped around and saw a man holding a laptop computer under his arm, his expression a bit uneasy. "Who...who the hell are you?" The man swallowed nervously. "Uh, my name is...well, I don't really have a name, but my doujin handle is REX. Viral scoffed, "Based off of Metal Gear Rex, from the MGS series...they made an anime of that you know...and you do remind me of a certain bespectacled fellow from the series...you have his luck with the ladies too?"

REX blushed, "Uh, actually...no, I live in a loft with a bunch of girls, I dunno what they see in me honestly. But they model for me when I need help with female body shapes." REX then seemed to realize what he said, and held his hands up defensively. "I pay them well, and I never force them to do anything! I swear!" Viral smirked, "I believe you kid, and if you're wondering what they see in you, you're in the Red Light...and you AREN'T a huge asshole, that means a lot." REX nodded, "I-If you say so, let's head to my loft, it's only a block over. We'll be safe from eavesdroppers there."

[Saber]

Saber crossed his arms when Viral started questioning why they insist on sticking with Viral, despite knowing what's happened to him, giving the virus a dull look. But before Saber could respond, someone spoke up behind Viral. The newcomer, some no-name by the alias of REX, claimed he wanted to get rid of the evolve program as well. Then, REX offered to let them talk in his loft, where there were going to be some other...roommates. Shrugging, he let REX lead the way, sticking close to Viral and speaking low enough for him to hear without drawing too much atention.

"Listen Viral...Contrary to what you might think, we all consider you one of our closest friends back home, despite your snarky and crude tendencies. We know what's happened to you, and we're not going to sit by and let you fade away on your own. For once, get over your lone wolf bullshit and realize that we're with you until the end, and you're not getting rid of us no matter how hard you try!"

[Mani4c]

Viral smirked when Saber tried to talk him down, in his own blunt way. "Heh, coming from the one that had to get his little bro to smack the lone wolf outta him when Mani4c couldn't...Look asshole, The Doctor and Bit have been trying to fix this for over a MONTH. Forge was trying as soon as he fucking met me, it's hopeless, and that's fine. It's the way of the world, Wind blows, the rain falls, the strong prey on the weak...and everyone dies eventually."

Viral, despite talking about his own death, was remarkably calm. "I'm not afraid of dying Saber, I'm afraid of Lilith's data being abused before I go, this is my last hurrah, and you know what? Giving my life to give this "new" Lilith, Abraxas, and all of his dickless pals the finger...it's the best way I can think of going out. So you, Baretta, and most of all Mani4c, stop wasting your time with trying to save me, use that energy to find out a way to save the world like you always do..." Viral walked ahead, leaving Saber behind and moving next to REX. "So...Doujin huh? You draw porn or something?" REX blushed, "Eh...sometimes? I mostly write action/adventure or romance stories, but every once and a while I try my hand at more adult things."

Viral nodded, "And the women?" "They're an odd bunch, I offered them a place to stay, and they found an adult manga I was drafting about a knight and a female sorceress..." Viral chuckled, "A classic."  "I thought they'd have my head, but instead they were interested in helping me to improve the artwork and stories...I'm not gonna lie, I'd never be anywhere as good as I am now without their help." Viral smirked, "Behind every great porn writer, there is a better woman...Or something like that."

It took only 5 minutes for the group to reach REX's flat, it was at the top of a small building, no more than 5 stories high. "A studio penthouse?" REX shrugged, "It was in horrible shape when I found it, but once I fixed it up, it was a cozy place with plenty of living space."

Rex unlocked the door and stepped in, "Anyone home?" There was a tired groan from behind a large couch, followed by a woman's voice. "Yes, yes...We're home, just a moment..." A woman sat up from the couch and rubbed her eyes, her hair falling down over her face. "Ah, Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to Elise." Elise nodded and stretched her arms before standing up. "Nice to meet you...what the hell are they doing here?" REX sighed, "I brought them to help get rid of this Evolve business." Elise sighed, "You realize that by doing this, you're putting a target the size of the alps on your back as well as ours, right?" REX sighed, "I know...and I'm sorry, but I can't let this keep happening, people are getting hurt!"

Another voice came from a nearby doorway, where two more women walked out to greet their "boss". The older looking one of the duo spoke first, a grin on her face."Typical, his conscience has always been his weak point." The younger looking woman nodded, "Yeah, but that's why we like him isn't it?"

REX smiled and gave a short wave to the two women. "Oh, there you are! Guys, the woman with the blonde hair is Lupa, and the woman with the glasses is Libra." 

[Saber]

Saber followed Viral as he once again, gave him a half countering reply, and went to talk with REX *As clueless as ever...* He decided to let it go. He said his piece, and Viral said his.

When they made it to the loft, REX called the attention of three girls, each one beautiful in their own right. But he knew how things worked in the red light district, and he wasn't looking to get any undesirable mods that would get him on Mirror's bad side, so he kept his behavior as professional as possible as REX introduced them all "Pleased to meet you ladies. Sorry for barging in unannounced like this, we'll try and keep REX's involvement to a minimum, so none of you are targeted."

[Mani4c]

Elise laughed, walking up to Saber and putting her hand on Saber's shoulder. "We appreciate it honey, though I'd still prefer to be gone when this is over." Viral chose this moment to speak up, "The Durendal is able to take on a small number of refugees, but we're still waiting on support from outside the country to evacuate mass numbers of civilians." Elise looked at Viral, noticing how ill he looked, "Wow, you alright?" Viral nodded, "I've been better, but I'm far from dead."

REX sat down at a small computer console in a corner of the room, setting down his laptop and plugging it into the console. "I use the laptop for more sensitive information, just a moment." REX rapidly tapped a string of commands into the computer, bringing up a video player. "Just need to find the file...ah, there it is!" REX tapped out another command, activating a projector that was set up in the middle of the room.

There was a bit of static at first before the video became clear. The location of the video seemed to be a warehouse of some kind, with a large open storage area dominated by catwalks and platforms. But it was what was in the center of the room that drew the viewer's attention. The object was huge, easily 20 feet across and 10 feet high. It looked like a massive cocoon made out of a black, viscous fluid, anchored to the ground by a large, squat trunk and supported by a huge number of large tendrils.

After about 30 seconds, two figures walked into frame, one of them was clearly Massacre, his bright red color and grating voice making him stand out instantly. "Hehehe...with this, it'll only be about a week until we've got an army of foaming at the mouth lunatics with that broad Lilith's powers!" The second figure was silent for a moment, before speaking in a calm, collected monotone. "Watch your tongue Massacre, That is my leader you are insulting...and if you speak ill of her again in my presence, I'll gut you like a fish."

Massacre ignored the warning, "Whatever...how the hell did she pony up this much code anyways?" "It isn't just her code, Genome used it as the base, before adding in a number of viral strains to increase replication, potency and resilience." Suddenly, the video became hazy, as the camera was ripped from the wall. "What the fuck is this!?" Massacre walked up and looked at the camera, giving the viewers a good look at his face. "It's a security camera, but why the fuck is it working!?"

The voice from before, now tinged with annoyance, came from out of frame. "It only took you a month to ruin this plan with your foolishness, these cameras send direct video to whomever is using them, and your associate just ruined any chance of us tracing it. I am going to report this to lord Abraxas, you have one week to finish up here. After that, we're moving." With that Massacre grabbed the camera, whipped it at the ground, and stomped it. Cutting the feed.

REX looked at the two NPD officers. "That video was taken three days ago, I've heard from rumors that this Abraxas guy is coming TONIGHT, we've got 9 hours before he arrives, if you want to destroy this operation, you'll need to move fast."

[Saber]

Saber crossed his arms and studied the video feed, recognizing Massacre, but not the other individual. When the video feed ended, and REX explained the situation, Saber looked at REX, and the 3 girls "You've done more than enough for us, REX. If you can give us the fastest traceroute to that server, we'll be able to rush in and do the rest. I'll signal to the durendal to scan for refugees when it arrives, just look for a flying ship and you can find shelter while we handle the fighting."

[Mani4c]

REX nodded, "You got it...one sec." REX typed out another command on his laptop, pulling up a trace-route and giving it to Viral and Saber. Lupa walked into a back room and came out holding three cases. "Alright, if we're going to be going out there, we're gonna need these." Lupa opened one of the cases, pulling out a long rifle with a scope mounted on the top. "This..is mine. Libra, yours is the smallest one, the middle case belongs to Elise."

The two women opened their respective cases, Libra's holding an SMG with a drum magazine, and Elise's containing a crossbow. Viral raised an eyebrow at the sight of these three women holding weapons, even more impressive was that they were comfortable with them, indicating that they had used them repeatedly. Elise noticed Viral's expression and laughed. "What, you think three beautiful women living in this shithole town wouldn't know how to use a weapon?" "I'm more surprised by the choice of weaponry myself."

REX powered down the laptop, storing his terminal's data on the portable computer.  "Alright, I have some emergency flares, they're bright green, tell the Durendal to look for the green smoke." Viral nodded, "We will, thank you." Viral turned and left, leaving Saber behind. 

[Saber]

Saber looked at REX and the girls for a moment, before turning away and following Viral as he rushed towards the manufacturing site. While tailing Viral, he opened a comm link with the Durendal <This is Saber, come in. Viral and I are on our way to the manufacturing site for the evolve virus. We'll send up flares when we arrive on site, but there are still civilians inside of the city who are not affected by the virus. We need a scouting team to collect the refugees onto the Durendal as well as a backup squadron to assist us if things get heated. Copy?>

Baretta received Saber's message and responded back <Copy that Saber. I'll rally the troops and brief them on our objective. I just hope we can finish this and get back to our district, the Statin Island and Long Island branches are covering for us while we're off on this manhunt.> Turning to the officers in the helm, she started delegating her orders "Send word out to the troops on the durendal, I need to brief them on our next plan of action!"

[Mani4c]

Viral made it to street level rather quickly, moving through the throngs of people with a purpose before firing a chain whip at a nearby building and pulling himself onto the roof. "I'm killing that sick fuck, and if Saber doesn't like it, tough shit." Viral followed the trace-route, reaching the Warehouse in less than 5 minutes, using the rooftops to avoid the crowds when he could. Viral knelt down and scanned the building's roof, there weren't any guards posted, but considering Massacre was admittedly a powerful opponent, not to mention the lackey and robed stranger that Viral had seen in the video.

'Probably some kind of commanders. Doesn't matter, Saber and the others are capable of handling them, I'll take care of Massacre.' Viral leaped from the rooftop, landing silently in an alleyway next to the building, he scanned the area before summoning one of his knives, using the blade to cut open the lock on a nearby side door before slipping inside.

The officer's on the command deck all saluted, responding with a combined cry of "YES MA'AM!" before exploding into a flurry of activity. ((Brothers in Arms: Halo CE OST)) In the armory of the Durendal, NPD Commandos began to suit up in their combat gear, sealing helmets, checking breathing filters, and loading de-rez rifles. The Doctor calibrated a force of officers in powered armor. Justicar sharpened his sword before pulling on his helmet and heading to the Durendal's hanger bay. Shepard activated her own armor and drew an automatic De-rez rifle from her back, cocking it and walking towards a waiting VTOL. The wave 2 cyberblades sharpened their weapons and summoned their armor, checking all of their systems before following Justicar out into the hanger bay.

Finally, Mani4c and Noxus both prepared their weapons, with Mani4c in particular having a sharp glint in his eye. Mani4c pulled on his helmet, locking the seals in place with a sharp hiss, he then pulled back the charging lever on his rifle, activating the weapon with a satisfying *Clack*. The viral officer looked up and saw Justicar, the Cyberblades, and Shepard walking towards the VTOL, all fully armed and armored. "Shepard...give me internal comms, I got something to say." Shepard hesitated for a moment before giving Mani4c access to internal comms. <Alright boys, listen up! Abraxas thought he had us fucking beat, waltzing into our home and wrecking the place, killing officers and stealing away our friends...but I say he's FUCKED WITH THE WRONG COPS!> There was a triumphant roar throughout the ship, Mani4c continued, speaking over the din. <We've got intel that these fucking cockroaches are hiding in the Red-Light, and we're gonna go in, wreck their shit, pump 'em full of lead, and give them a pool of their own goddamn blood to drown in...AM I RIGHT OFFICERS!?> There was a resounding reply of "YES SIR!" throughout the ship, Mani4c smirked, <Damn straight I am, NOW LOAD UP!> With that, Mani4c cut the connection and looked at Shepard. "Let's go ream these fuckers a new asshole."

[Saber]

Baretta smiled and shook her head, noticing Shepard was in the crowd of avatars preparing to join the fray. Deciding she needed a commander on both fronts, Baretta made a direct line to Shepard "Commissioner, I think it would be best that you join the rescue team, Mani4c already has the forces riled and ready for war, we need someone on the ground to command the squads charged with salvaging the uninfected refugees."

Saber was already back up in the air, in his demonic camouflaged Skystrike, and overheard Viral's comment about Massacre "You can have him, Viral. This is war they want, and in war, trophies are claimed. In your case, you get to feast on his dying corpse. Keep in mind, he's weak to fire and electricity, and he can't bounce melee attacks off of his body. You want to kill him, get up close and personal.
